Paideia High School Summer Reading 2025: Tally Johnson

Required Summer Reading

Tally's English Classes

Your summer reading assignment is to read the ONE required book and TWO other books of your choice for a total of THREE books this summer.

Tally will expect you to be able to discuss and/or write about the required book in class.

For each of the two Free-Choice books, you will submit a Reading Response form for your grade.

9th Grade English

Read Hello World: Being Human in the Age of Algorithms by Hannah Fry, plus any TWO additional books of your choice.

11th & 12th Grade Themes: "Beyond the Grave (T)"

Read Angels in America (Part 1): Millenium Approaches,  plus any TWO additional books of your choice

Note from Tally: I’m listing the complete edition of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America in the class book list - you should get both parts. The complete edition includes both Part One: Millennium Approaches, which is part of your summer reading assignment, and Part Two: Perestroika, which we’ll be reading/ watching/ discussing in the fall. For each of the following, be ready to share what exactly you read and what you thought.

For summer reading:

  1. Read Tony Kushner’s Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches. Look up words and references you aren’t familiar with, and jot down notes. It is fine to listen to or watch versions available, but make sure you also read the text and notice how it works on the printed page. Notice stage directions for split scenes, and dialogue overlapping from two different couples, for example. If you watch the miniseries adaptation, notice differences from the original text.
  2. Read at least two other books - your choice - and submit a Reading Response form for each one.

11th & 12th Grade Seminar: "The Future is Female+: Literature Through the Lens of Gender (S)"

Read The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston, plus any TWO additional books of your choice.
